Holding chickens

When we first got to the farm in the morning we discovered there were 18 new chickens. 18!!!
They were tiny and running around cheeping in the cage. Janine told us we could get some out for the children to hold so we all sat on the tarp, Jemma crawled into the cage and put 6 in a box. We had to sit very quietly with hands cupped and hold them over the top too so they didn’t jump off.

We have been able to hold them for two weeks running although on the second time it was really really tricky as they are bigger, have bigger claws and their wings are getting stronger. It is a real treat to be able to handle such tiny delicate birds and a fabulous learning opportunity.
